About This Event
Event Verbiage: Please join Meztli Projects' artists for a printmaking workshop honoring our plant and animal relatives of Kaweenga (Cahuenga). Using lino blocks inspired by Tongva basketry patterns, create unique prints and cards layering colors, patterns and designs. About the Artist:Joel Garcia (Huichol) is an artist, arts administrator, educator, and cultural organizer with 20+ years of experience working transnationally on community-centered strategies. His approach is rooted in Indigenous-based forms of dialoguing and decision-making that uplift non-institutional expertise. Joel uses art and organizing to raise awareness of issues facing underserved communities, inner-city youth, and other targeted populations. His art explores healing and reconciliation, as well as memory and place garnering national press in publications such as the LA Times, New Yorker, and Artforum among others. About Meztli Projects: Meztli Projects is an Indigenous based arts & culture collaborative centering Indigeneity into the creative practice of Los Angeles by using arts-based strategies to support, advocate for, and organize to highlight Native and Indigenous Artists and systems-impacted youth. Meztli Projects operates out of Apachianga (East Los Angeles) in Tovaangar (Los Angeles County), lands stewarded since time immemorial by families and villages now known as the Acjachemen, Chumash, Tataviam and Tongva Tribal Nations. Brought to you by The Los Angeles Parks Foundation & community members like you! *Registration is required for workshops to ensure we get a head count and have all the necessary materials.
