AAPIHM Kick Off

Join us as we kick off Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month at Pretend City. Families are invited to explore activities and stories that highlight the cultures, traditions, and contributions of Asian American and Pacific Islander communities. TIMES: 11 am, 1pm, & 2:30pm *Members do not require a reservation. *Events and dates are subject to change. About the play partners: Kishin Daiko Since the group’s establishment at the East San Gabriel Valley Japanese Community Center in June of 1981, Kishin Daiko has continued to entertain, educate and enlighten audiences with the dynamic, powerful and heart stopping sounds of taiko (Japanese percussive-style drumming). The group’s performances embody the translation of Kishin, which is energy, spirit, and heart. Kishin Daiko’s music consists of traditional and adaptations of traditional Japanese taiko pieces, along with original compositions by contemporary musicians and Kishin members. Manea Dancers After dancing for several years with Tahitian groups and hawaiian groups in the late 70 and 80’s, Judy Krenz wanted to share her knowledge to children and adults who wanted to learn the culture through dance and song. She formed the Manea dancers group in the 80’s. Manea means beautiful in the Tahitian language. She chose the name because it signifies her objective in training her dancers to be beautiful in their dance and most of all their character. She has dancers in her group today that she has trained since they were 5 years old. She feels proud to see these dancers blossom. At present, the Manea Dancers have a total of 30 dancers, drummers, and musicians. Every year, the Manea Dancers have at least 200 + shows and we service the following organization/clients Senior homes- all overLos Angeles,San Diego, San Fernando valley, Orange County, Schools-LAUnified, Montessoris, pre schools all over Los Angeles Private homes Corporate events Hotels TVand Movies Chinatown Firecracker run-Chinese new year Sandimashoolaulea PINOY KIDS is a nonprofit organization for kids with Filipino blood whose goal is to spread Philippine Culture through cultural dances and Filipino songs. Ages range from 4 years old to 18 years old. PK was established in 2006 when a group of 6th graders entered a talent show at Buena Terra Elementary School in Buena Park, Ca. Ms. Maria Tinajero – Dowdle was one of the students’ parents watching the Talent Show. After the show, she approached the Filipino Family and invited the kids to perform in La Habra Museum. This increased the eagerness and willingness of the kids to perform more Filipino cultural dances. That started the PK to perform in Orange County Fair, Town Fiestas, Cultural shows in the mall, parks, Churches, Nursing Homes and many more. They too learned how to do Christmas Caroling, a December tradition singing Christmas songs. The kids absorbed how to love their ancestors’ mother land, Philippines and its cultures. They understood how to function as a team, and most especially how to have fun and enjoy learning the culture of their ancestors.
